Stump Grinding Pricing in Maryland
After a tree comes down, the stump sitting in your yard is more than an eyesore. It's a tripping hazard, a harborage point for termites and carpenter ants, and a source of fungal disease that can spread to nearby healthy trees. Stump grinding is the clean, efficient solution — and on Maryland's Eastern Shore it typically costs $150–$600 per stump.
What Determines the Cost
Stump Diameter
The single biggest factor. A 10-inch ornamental stump takes 15 minutes. A 48-inch white oak takes a full morning. Most contractors price by diameter — typically $3–$6 per inch of diameter at ground level. So a 24-inch stump might be $72–$144 by formula, but most companies have a minimum charge of $150–$200 per mobilization.
Number of Stumps
Grinding multiple stumps in one visit is significantly cheaper per stump. If you have 3+ stumps, the per-stump price drops because the mobilization cost is spread across all of them.
Wood Hardness
Hardwoods (oak, maple, ash) are slower to grind than softwoods (pine, poplar). A very large hardwood stump can add 30–50% to the time and cost.
Accessibility
Our stump grinder is a machine that needs to fit through a gate or around landscaping. If we have to use a smaller unit or hand-carry equipment, the labor cost increases.
Typical Pricing (2025 Eastern Shore)
- Small stumps (under 12" diameter): $150 – $225
- Medium stumps (12–24" diameter): $225 – $375
- Large stumps (24–36" diameter): $375 – $500
- Very large stumps (36"+): $500 – $750+
- Multiple stumps (3+) per visit: 15–25% discount per stump
Grind Depth Options
Standard grinding takes stumps 6–8 inches below grade — deep enough to stop regrowth and for grass to grow over. If you're planning to replant a tree or install a structure over the site, we can grind 12+ inches below grade. This adds time and cost but ensures no root interference.
